Other Resources

Harford County really is a great place to homeschool!  There are great umbrellas and co-ops to join.  Additionally, the county Parks and Recreation centers have classes available for homeschoolers.  Also, there's a homeschool bookshop in the area.

The homeschool bookshop is called the Narrow Road Homeschool Bookshop.  It is located in Jarretsville, Maryland.  The owner is Phyllis Harden and she is a wonderful resource when it comes to curriculum and homeschooling in Harford County.  Call before you go or check the website for the hours.

Exploration Art School is going to be offering art classes at the Fallston/Hickory Parks and Rec Center this fall.

Highlands School is located on rte 543 in Bel Air.  It is a full-time school for children with ADHD, Dyslexia, and other language-based learning differences.  They do have a half time program and tutoring available for homeschoolers.  If you have a child who has a learning disability, there are many curriculums like Calvert's Verticy Learning (which uses the Orton Gillingham reading method) available to parents.

If you would like a part-time preschool program, most of the high schools in Harford County (North Harford, Bel Air, Edgewood, Aberdeen, Joppatowne, and possibly others) offer a pre-k program for 3 and 4 year olds.  The program is 2 days a week for 2-3 hours per session.  The times may be earlier than other programs in the area, but the cost is very reasonable ($60/year).  It has been a great program for my 3 kids.  You do need to apply in April/May as spots fill up very quickly.

During the summertime, Harford County Public Schools offers reasonable swim lessons at Edgewood Middle School and North Harford Middle School for $52/2 week session (daily lessons) for K-12.  For more info, click here.  Sign-ups start the first week in May each year.  Swim lessons are offered in the area at other places like Kids First Swim Center in the Festival at Bel Air (year round), Fountain Green Swim Club (in the summer), Aquaculture in Forest Hill (year round), the Arena Club, Abingdon YMCA (year round), and at Beachmont Christian Camp in the summer as well.

The libraries offer various science kits (LEAP kits) that can be requested.   and other homeschooling programs throughout the year.
